Author Guidelines

The New Bulletin of the Main Botanical Garden publishes materials that are original and have not been previously published in significant part. Manuscripts submitted must not be under consideration or scheduled for publication elsewhere.

The journal accepts manuscripts in all fields of plant science, including, but not limited to, systematics and taxonomy, floristics, botanical geography and geobotany, morphology and anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, genetics, plant breeding, and biotechnology.

Publication types: Original research articles, reviews, and informational materials. Brief communications and personalia are also accepted. When publishing descriptions of new taxa or reports of new plant records, supporting voucher specimens must be deposited in the Herbarium of the Main Botanical Garden RAS (MHA).

Publication languages: Russian and English.

Submission: Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the online submission system. The main text file must be in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx).

Editorial Process: The editorial board makes publication decisions based on peer review, considering the scientific significance and relevance of the manuscript. Articles rejected by the editorial board will not be reconsidered.

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION GUIDELINES

Length and Structure:
Manuscript length is flexible but should be appropriate to the content. The text must be grammatically correct in either Russian or English. Extensive datasets and supplementary materials (tables, illustrations) may be published as online appendices.

Manuscripts should be structured as follows:

  • Article title
  • Author information: Full names and initials of all authors. Full official names and addresses of their affiliated institutions. If authors are from different institutions, this should be indicated using superscript numerals.
  • Corresponding author's email address
  • Abstract: A concise summary (up to 300 words) of the research problem, key findings, and conclusions. It should not duplicate the introduction or conclusion.
  • Keywords: Up to 10 terms that do not merely repeat the title and aid in article indexing. Keywords must be provided in both Russian and English.
  • Main text, typically including:
    • Introduction
    • Materials and Methods
    • Results
    • Discussion
    • Conclusion(s) (optional)
  • Funding information: Sources of financial support (grants, institutional funding, etc.), including state assignment or project numbers, must be declared.
  • Acknowledgements: Recognition of individuals or organizations that contributed to the work but are not authors.
  • Conflict of interest: Authors must disclose any financial, professional, or personal relationships that could be perceived as influencing the research. The existence of a conflict of interest does not automatically lead to rejection; however, failure to disclose such conflicts may result in the manuscript being declined.
  • References

Metadata Block (in English for Russian articles, and vice versa):

  • Article title
  • Author names (transliterated for Russian articles)
  • Affiliations with official English-language names (consult the RUNEB website on ru for standardized names)
  • Summary/Abstract (The English summary for a Russian article need not be a direct translation and may exceed 300 words)
  • Keywords

Theoretical, review, and perspective articles may have a different structure but must include an abstract, keywords, and a reference list.

Author Information:
Upon submission, a separate file titled Last_name_info.doc must include the following information in both Russian and English for each author:

  • Full name (Last name, First name, Patronymic)
  • Full affiliation and postal address
  • ORCID iD
  • Contact details (office/mobile phone, email) of the corresponding author.

MANUSCRIPT FORMATTING REQUIREMENTS

Files
The text, illustrations (photographs, diagrams, graphs), and tables must be submitted electronically via the online submission system. Illustrations and tables should be embedded in their appropriate places within the main text file and also uploaded as separate files. All figure captions and table titles should be provided in a separate document. Files should be named using the first author's surname (e.g., Ivanov_fig1.jpg, Ivanov_table1.docx).

Text Formatting

The text must be typed in MS Word in 12 pt Times New Roman font. The text should be unformatted, meaning it should not contain tabs, columns, word hyphenation, etc. Pages should not be numbered.

The article text should be typed with 1.5 line spacing and left-aligned. The paragraph indent should be 1.25 cm. Subheadings, abstracts, and keywords should have no paragraph indent.

The decimal separator in numbers is a comma. The symbol for a micrometer (micron) is µm.

When indicating area dimensions, the multiplication symbol "×" should be used, not the letter "x", and it should be separated from the numbers by spaces, e.g., "1 × 2 m", not "1х2 m".

When indicating value ranges, an en dash (key combination Alt + 0150 or Ctrl + minus sign on the numeric keypad) should be used, not a hyphen, e.g., "1,2–3,4", not "1,2-3,4".

The degree symbol "°" (key combination Alt + 0176 on the numeric keypad) should be used to denote degrees, not the lowercase letter "o", e.g., "35°", not "35о" or "35o".

The headings of the main sections of the manuscript (Introduction, Materials and Methods, etc.), as well as second and third-level subheadings (if any), are written on a separate line in lowercase letters and are not formatted.

Nomenclature and Terminology

All abbreviations, except for widely accepted ones, must be spelled out upon first use. Latin plant names and author citations should follow the International Plant Names Index (IPNI). Names of taxa above the genus level should be in standard font; genus names and below should be italicized. The first mention of a species in the main text must include its author(s) in standard font. In all articles not related to plant systematics and nomenclature, taxon names should be given in accordance with the Plants of the World Online | Kew Science (POWO) database, unless the authors have specific reasons to disagree with the names accepted therein. In the latter case, the reasons for this must be explicitly explained in the text of the article.

Names of taxa of hybrid origin should be given using the multiplication symbol "×", not the letter "x", for example, Populus × canadensis, but not Populus x canadensis.

A new sentence cannot begin with an abbreviated genus name (i.e., the first letter of the Latin genus name in a binomial). For example, "Populus × canadensis is a hybrid…" is correct, whereas "P. × canadensis is a hybrid…" is incorrect. In floristic articles, which contain data on a large number of species from different genera, genus names in binomials must be written in full throughout the text and not abbreviated to their initial letter.
Descriptions of new taxa and other nomenclatural acts must comply with the latest edition of the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants (https://www.iapt-taxon.org/nomen/main.php).

Herbarium Specimens
Articles containing descriptions of new species or infraspecific taxa are accepted only after the type material (holotype or isotype) has been deposited in the Herbarium of the Main Botanical Garden RAS (MHA). Articles reporting new floristic records require the submission of representative voucher specimens.
Specimens should be mailed to: New Bulletin of the MBS, Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Botanicheskaya St., 4, Moscow, 127276, Russia.
High-quality scanned materials may be accepted in consultation with the editorial board.

Citing Specimens
References to studied specimens should be concise yet contain sufficient information for identification (collector's name, collection or field number, barcode, etc.). The herbarium acronym (following Index Herbariorum: http://sweetgum.nybg.org/science/ih/) and collection number should be provided in parentheses after the label data. An exclamation mark (!) should denote specimens examined by the author.
Collection localities should be specified as accurately as possible, including geographic coordinates (except for locations of rare and protected plants with commercial value, e.g., ornamental orchids). Modern geographic names should be used, verified against recent sources (current Russian atlases, official regional websites). For labels with incomplete data, the country or major region should be added in square brackets (e.g., [India], [Krasnoyarsk Krai]). For renamed localities, provide both the historical name (from the label) and the modern equivalent. The names of Russian federal subjects must correspond to Chapter 3 of the current Constitution of the Russian Federation (http://www.constitution.ru/10003000/10003000-5.htm; http://www.constitution.ru/en/10003000-04.htm). This applies to both Russian and English text.

Tables

Tables must be created in MS Word. Each table must have a title, as well as row and column headings in both Russian and English. All tables must be referenced in the text. Tables are numbered in the order of their mention (a single table is not numbered). Each table should be inserted into the text at the appropriate location and also submitted as a separate file.

Abbreviations and acronyms must be explained in the table notes. Tables that span more than one page or require landscape page orientation should be placed in the appendices.

Numerical data in tables and in the text should be rounded to two decimal places by default, unless the authors specifically state the need for greater precision.

Illustrations

Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams) should be placed in the text at the appropriate locations and also submitted as separate electronic files with the extensions .tiff, .png, or .jpg for raster images, and .svg or .pdf for vector graphics. The illustrations must fit the journal's page width of 14.5 cm.

  • Resolution: Illustrations must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi for raster images (RGB and Grayscale) and at least 600 dpi for line art.
  • Plates: Ready-made plates with multiple illustrations should be formatted to the journal's linear dimensions (page width of 14.5 cm), with a distance of 2 mm between the elements of the plate.

All figures in the text must be numbered consecutively (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.). Captions should be provided in the main MS Word file in both Russian and English, directly below the corresponding illustrations. Within a plate or a complex multi-part figure, individual parts should be labeled with letters of the Latin alphabet (Fig. 1. a–d).

Microphotographs, as well as graphic drawings of plants and their fragments, must include a scale bar. For graphs and diagrams, use contrasting colors or textures; whenever possible, avoid conveying critical information solely by contrasting red and green, as these colors are indistinguishable to individuals with color vision deficiency (color blindness).

CITING SOURCES AND REFERENCE LIST

In-Text Citations
The article may only cite published works. References to unpublished manuscripts or "in press" works are not permitted.

In the text, references should be provided in parentheses using the Latin alphabet. Examples:

  • "As indicated by A. N. B. Ivanov (Ivanov, 1989)..."
  • "As shown earlier (Ivanov, 1989)..."
  • For direct quotations, include the page number: (Ivanov, 1989: 8–9).

The names of foreign authors are given in Latin. Initials precede the surname and are provided only at the first mention, without spaces between them. For publications with more than two authors, use the first author's name followed by "et al." References to multiple sources should be listed in chronological order (Kuznetsov, 2012; Kuznetsov & Smirnov, 2014; Green et al., 2019). Works by the same authors are also ordered chronologically; if the publication year is identical, they are distinguished by lowercase letters (Kuznetsov, 2012a; Smith, 2010b), corresponding to their order in the reference list. For collective monographs, cite the chapter author or the editor (Petrov, 2016).

Reference List (References)
The reference list should be arranged in alphabetical order and placed at the end of the article. It must include only works cited in the text. Publications by one author are arranged by year, if there is a second author, alphabetically by co–author, then by year; in the case of two or more co–authors, only by year. In articles with a large number of authors, the first 7 authors are cited and further indicated by et al. If the last name of the corresponding author is last in the list of authors, the first 6 authors are given, followed by an ellipsis and the last author in the article.

Formatting Rules:

  1. Publications in Cyrillic: The bibliographic entry is given in a single paragraph:
    • Author names (transliterated).
    • Publication year.
    • Title of the work translated into English (if available, taken from the publication itself).
    • Journal title (official Latin/English name if available, otherwise transliterated), volume(issue): page-range.
    • Finally, the full description in the original language, including the DOI (if available), is provided in square brackets. The publication language is indicated in parentheses (e.g., (in Russian), (in Chinese), etc.). The name of the journal (both transliterated and original) is given in italics.
    • Transliteration must be performed using the BSI standard via https://transliterapro/bsi-online-transliteration.
  2. Journal Articles:
    • Year. Article title. Journal Title (not abbreviated). Volume(Issue):Page-Page. DOI
  3. Books:

  4. Dissertations/Dissertation Abstracts:
    • Year. Dissertation Title. [Degree]. Place and Year of Defense. Pages.
  5. Patents:
    • Year. Patent Title. Country, Patent Number. Date.
  6. Electronic Resources:
